Inside Rob Lan\u2019s Shaping Residency at Somos<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-two boards in two weeks is a decent way to introduce yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Lan, an East Coast-born surfboard shaper now based on Oahu, Hawaii, came down to Santa Teresa as the sixth shaper to work out of the House of Somos factory in 2026. He arrived with two weeks ahead of him and left with a very full rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob currently works at Murray Glassing in Hawaii, where, between glassing other people\u2019s boards, he handshapes and glasses his own. His boards lean alternative, but not alternative for the sake of being weird. They\u2019re designed around something fairly practical: making surfing easier without making it boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up around the less consistent surf of the East Coast and now building boards for waves in Hawaii has shaped the way he approaches design. He likes boards with enough paddle and glide to get into waves early, but enough control and drive to keep working when there\u2019s considerably more going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that can find a high line, carry speed through a soft section, draw a proper wrap on the shoulder or, given the opportunity, disappear behind the curtain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santa Teresa was a pretty good place to put those ideas to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaping for Santa Teresa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before getting too comfortable in the shaping room, Rob spent a fair amount of time doing research the obvious way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the beach break two minutes from Somos, he spent his first days grabbing different boards from our rental rack, surfing out front and getting a feel for what the waves here actually ask for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santa Teresa can change quite a bit from one day to the next. Different sandbars, different swell directions, different amounts of push. A board that feels right on one corner might tell you something completely different a hundred meters down the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That time in the water fed directly back into the shaping bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than arriving with a fixed formula, Rob used the two weeks to get familiar with the place, the waves and the surfers who would eventually be riding what he made. The residency became part shaping trip, part fieldwork, with the beach out front acting as a pretty convenient testing ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foam, Resin and 22 New Boards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By the end of Rob\u2019s two weeks at Somos, 22 fresh shapes had come out of the bay and were moving through the rest of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob didn\u2019t leave all the resin work to the house crew either. He jumped into the glassing bay and laid up two abstract jobs himself, while the rest of the batch followed a color palette he picked before heading back to Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-two boards is a solid amount of foam to leave behind after two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Lan Surfboards, Now at Somos Surf Shop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The finished batch is now on the racks at the House of Somos Surf Shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
