Unknown Roads: Zac Chambers at House of Somos
Some residencies start in the studio. Zac Chambers’ started outside of it.
After winning the Madre Mezcal × House of Somos artist residency, Zac arrived in Santa Teresa, dropped his bags and got moving. He came to paint, but first he wanted to understand where he was.
For two weeks, the process became almost ritualistic. Go out. Walk the beach. Follow the town’s only road. Meet people. Notice something. Come back and paint.
The work grew from those small encounters with the place rather than from any fixed plan. New friends, unfamiliar routines, bits of landscape and whatever else managed to stick with him on the way back to the studio.
That rhythm became Unknown Roads, a short film about Zac’s residency, his process and what happens when making work becomes less about arriving with an idea and more about letting a place change it.
He came for two weeks.
He left a little more tangled up in Santa Teresa than when he arrived.
Probably the point all along.
