Allegra Pacheco
Costa Rica
Allegra Pacheco follows an obsession until it becomes something you can look at. Or sit through in a cinema. The Costa Rican artist moves between painting, ceramics, photography and film, choosing the medium that gets her closer to the subject. Her documentary Salaryman took seven years to make, examining Japanese work culture and the lives caught inside it.
Her Blood Sugar paintings get into another kind of pressure: boxing and MMA. Fighters blur into oil paint, with pinks and soft colors complicating the expected brutality. She boxes herself, and pays attention to the trust and camaraderie around the ring. There’s more to a fight than the blows. A bunch of her work now lives with us at SOMOS.
