Loose figures. Strong color. Colin Holloway works from a studio in Joshua Tree, moving between painting and music and building both in layers. The desert gives him the quiet to concentrate. What turns up on the canvas can be a little less settled.

Before starting, he sits with the work. Coffee, sometimes mezcal, and a stretch of staring. At SOMOS, beach breaks with his family and days of heavy rain helped loosen a creative rut. The work started moving again. Sometimes the useful thing is to leave a little room for whatever happens next.
